SR 19 Reconstruction and Shaler Street Bridge Replacement Wins ASHE Pittsburgh Award
Lochner is pleased to announce the SR 19 Reconstruction and Shaler Street Bridge Replacement project was selected for the 2020 Outstanding Highway Engineering Award in Category B (Projects Greater than $7 Million, Less than $20 Million) by the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Pittsburgh Section. Lochner provided design and construction consultation services for this Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project.
A high-volume, north-south expressway that bisects southern Pittsburgh, SR 19 is the primary route between the North Shore and I-376 to the Pittsburgh International Airport. It serves as the hazardous material bypass for the Fort Pitt Tunnel and provides essential access to Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Completing the full-depth reconstruction of this corridor also included replacing the Shaler Street Bridge, which crosses over SR 19. A primary goal for the project was to replace the Shaler Street Bridge while maintaining traffic on this critical connector. Lochner designed the new two-span Shaler Street Bridge to be constructed off-site and moved to its final location using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The project marked the first time this innovative accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology had been used on a PennDOT project and reduced SR 19 construction closures to a total of four days, significantly minimizing impacts to motorists along this busy corridor.
