Lochner Selected as 2021 ACEC/PA Structural Systems Award Winner
We are pleased to announce the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) has named Lochner the 2021 Structural Systems Diamond Award winner for the completion of the Shaler Street Bridge Replacement project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lochner provided design and construction consultation services for this Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project.
“Lochner created and completed a much‐needed fix to State Route 19 in Pittsburgh, which will make traffic flow easier,” said Leeann Sherman, executive director of ACEC/PA. “Lochner’s use of new technology, such as self‐propelled modular transporters, played a substantial part in making this project successful.”
The replacement of the Shaler Street Bridge was part of the PennDOT project to reconstruct SR 19. This corridor, which crosses underneath the bridge, is a high-volume, north-south expressway that provides critical access to I‐376, Pittsburgh’s West End, and Heinz Field. Construction closures for the project had to be coordinated around heavy commuter travel times and Heinz Field events. To replace the Shaler Street Bridge while maintaining traffic along SR 19, Lochner designed the two-span bridge to be constructed off-site and moved to its final location using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The project marked the first time this innovative accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology had been used on a PennDOT project and reduced SR 19 construction closures to a total of four days.
