In conjunction with Kiewit Infrastructure Company, Lochner provided design-build engineering and architectural services for the $101 million North Main Line (Red) Stations Rehabilitation Project, located in Chicago, Illinois for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The project involved updates to the station interior, exterior and platforms as well as repairs to the viaducts and tracks at seven Red Line stations on the North Main Line. The goal of the project was to renew the stations for further service as they are nearing 100 years of age. The CTA Red Line is the busiest CTA rail line with the highest ridership of all CTA’s rail lines, serving an average of 248,145 passengers each weekday while running 24 hours a day. CTA Purple Line and Yellow Line trains also operate over the North Main Line. The Red Line CTA stations improved included Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, Thorndale, Granville, Morse and Jarvis. Lochner worked closely with Kiewit and the CTA to design improvements that could be constructed within the tight project schedule and with minimal disruptions to CTA riders.

As the lead designer, Lochner provided design services for reconstruction of the tack and third rail at each location; repair and replacement of deteriorated viaduct substructure elements; and repair of each viaduct including ballast retainer repair and replacement, waterproofing, general concrete repairs and a pigmented sealer to improve its appearance and durability. Design services were provided for the station exteriors including new face brick, storefronts, ornamental lighting; curtain walls and entry doors as well as new sidewalks and pavement. Lochner designed station interior improvements including terrazzo floors and interior finishes, new washrooms and janitor closets and expansion and reconfiguration of the station to improve the station appearance and operability. At platform level, Lochner designed new pre-cast concrete platforms and foundations, canopy repairs and drainage improvements.
