Route 281 Project Wins ACEC NY Award

Lochner’s Route 281 Reconstruction and Widening Project Wins ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Silver Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York recently announced the winners for their 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards. The Engineering Excellence Awards are presented to projects in the private and public sector, with more than 60 member firms providing submittals each year. These projects are judged based on a set list of criteria including complexity, innovation, and value to society by a panel of industry experts. These industry experts encompass military and government officials, ACEC National and International leadership, educators from college and university engineering departments, and leadership from other industry related organizations. In total, 155 projects will be honored on April 7, 2018 at the 51st Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in New York. Lochner’s Route 281 Reconstruction and Widening project received the Silver Award in the Transportation category and will be among the honored projects in April.

Lochner’s Route 281 Reconstruction and Widening project improved approximately 1.5 miles of roadway through the replacement of five signalized intersections, bridge reconstruction, corridor safety and mobility improvements, and a complex drainage and stormwater management system. Lochner served as the prime engineering consultant for design of the widening and reconstruction and was responsible for developing the Design Approval Document. With input from stakeholders, the public, and various review agencies, Lochner developed and refined a number of design alternatives, prepared the environmental assessment, and provided final design services for Phases 1 and 2. The final project exceeded client/owner needs by addressing capacity through added lanes, improved intersections, increased mobility and safety, and a reduction of severe accidents by 25 percent. Additionally, improvements increased pavement life and implemented an innovative stormwater management plan to address drainage along the corridor and protect the Cortland-Homer-Preble Aquifer System.
