Lochner Develops 3D Intelligent Design Model for UDOT
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) recently launched a pioneering program to implement fully 3D, paperless workflows, in which electronic 3D models, rather than the traditional 2D paper plans, form the projects’ legal documentation. The SR 10 widening project is one of three prototype projects within this leading-edge initiative and Lochner is currently developing a 3D “intelligent design” model as the advertising package for the project. Rather than creating their own 3D model from a 2D plan set, contractors will be able to load the model directly to automated machine guidance units on their equipment. Construction inspectors will use the model, via a handheld device, to verify and document contractor compliance with project specifications. Changes made in the field will be entered into the model to create a highly accurate as-built record that includes both GIS and GPS information. The model will also serve as a living, adaptable record with data on maintenance and rehabilitation activities during the life of the facility.
SR 10 is a two-lane facility that carries a high volume of truck traffic through the southern suburbs of Price, Utah. Lochner is the lead designer on the project, which is being delivered under a construction manager–general contractor (CMGC) project structure. Lochner’s design will widen the three-mile corridor to provide an additional turn lane, as well as new shoulders and sidewalk on both sides of the roadway.
