Housatonic Railroad Bridges Wins ACEC-CT Award
We are pleased to announce the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC-CT) awarded Housatonic Railroad Bridges the 2021 Engineering Excellence Award for Projects Under $10 Million. Under a multi-year, task-based contract with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), Lochner served as lead design consultant, providing design management, structural and civil design services, and development of permitting plans. For the Housatonic Railroad Bridges task, Lochner designed the replacement or rehabilitation of four railroad bridges along the Class III single-tracked Housatonic Railroad in New Milford, Kent, and Canaan, Connecticut. Three of the four railroad sites—which were spread between three towns and nearly 30 miles of track—required work to be completed in unison during a nine-day closure. Lochner developed a highly efficient design using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques to ensure lines became operational within the scheduled timeframe. For the fourth site, Lochner devised a precast concrete relief system, avoiding the costly replacement of an existing stone masonry arch and significantly minimizing project costs.
