Lochner Receives a 2020 ACEC/CT Engineering Excellence Award
On January 14, 2020, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC/CT) presented Lochner with an ACEC/CT Engineering Excellence Award for the firm’s work on the I-84/Route 2 Bridge Bundle Design-Build. The award was presented during the Engineering Excellence Award Banquet held at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, Connecticut.
Lochner served as lead designer for the I-84/Route 2 Bridge Bundle Design-Build—the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CTDOT) second design-build project with a construction cost of $22.1 million. The project replaced four superstructures, three located in the highly congested I-84/Route 2 interchange in East Hartford and one located over I-84 in Willington. Through the Alternative Technical Concept phase, Lochner recommended two of the bridges in East Hartford become full replacements. Lochner also recommended accelerated bridge construction techniques to reduce costs and construction schedules, allow for more efficient designs, and support an initiative by the Federal Highway Administration.
The resulting project was a single-span splayed steel girder superstructure replacement on Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil, Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) abutments at Route 2 ramp over I-84; a single-span steel girder superstructure replacement on GRS-IBS abutments over I-84; a three-span steel girder superstructure replacement on rehabilitated substructure with linked slabs over piers at Route 2; and a two-span steel girder prefabricated bridge unit superstructure replacement on strengthened substructure with Simple for Dead, Continuous for Live (SDCL) detailing over the pier and lightweight concrete decks at I-84 in Willington.
