Vote for I-84 Waterbury Widening to Win 2019 AASHTO People’s Choice Award

After winning the 2019 Operations Excellence Award in the Large Project category from the Northeast Association of Transportation Officials (NASTO), the reconstruction of I-84, from Washington Street to Pierpont Road, in Waterbury, Connecticut has gone on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious AASHTO 2019 America’s Transportation Awards.

The Top 12 list represents the highest scoring transportation projects from the regional competitions, and each will go on to compete for the Grand Prize, selected by a panel of judges from the transportation industry, and the People’s Choice Award, determined by online popular voting.

To vote for the People’s Choice Award, visit AASHTO’s 2019 America’s Transportation Awards website.

Online voting will end at 11:59 p.m. eastern time on Sunday, October 6. The winners of the People’s Choice Award and the Grand Prize will be announced at this year’s AASHTO Annual Meeting in St. Louis on Tuesday, October 8.

Lochner provided construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services for the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s I-84 Waterbury Widening project. The 2.7-mile section of roadway was a well-known bottleneck, requiring traffic to merge from a three-lane to two-lane section in each direction. Lochner oversaw the addition of a third travel lane in each direction. The $275-million project also included roadway realignment, new interchanges, nine new bridges, 20 retaining walls, six box culverts, and the relocation of Mad River and Beaver Pond Brook, which snake their way under I-84 from one end of the project to the other. The project was recognized for minimizing delays and disruptions to commuters while also completing construction a year early. The project team accomplished this feat by reducing lane widths and shifting traffic through multiple stages while only requiring lane closures at night, allowing the traveling public to safely travel through the project area.
