Sabine River Bridge Project Recognized at TxDOT Luncheon

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recognized twelve projects this year for the Texas Project Award Program. The Texas Project Award Program was established in 1987 to recognize the successful completion of projects under difficult circumstances that demonstrated cohesive teamwork between TxDOT employees and contractors to achieve spectacular results. The Construction Awards identify TxDOT project engineers and inspectors, as well as project managers representing general contractors who have gone to great lengths to deliver construction projects successfully. Lochner’s CEI Team Chief Inspector Robert Cagle and Project Manager Tom Hunter, PE were asked to join the TxDOT client in accepting a Construction Award at this year’s luncheon in August which recognized the Sabine River Bridge Project located in Newton County, Texas.

The Sabine River Bridge at Burr Ferry, a major artery connecting Texas and Louisiana, was flooded under several feet of water in early 2016, resulting in significant damage to its structural integrity. With a budget of just under $5 million and pressure from the community, repair work on the bridge included the replacement of concrete footings, extra foundations, and the shoring of pilings with a quick completion deadline. Tom and Robert led the inspection efforts for the bridge project, which was completed in a timely manner despite several tough challenges along the way.
