SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) Segment 1 Design, I‐75 (SR 93) to North of Canal C‐8 Bridge

To relieve congestion, enhance safety, and improve system connectivity on SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is widening and reconstructing SR 826 from the I‐75 interchange to north of Canal C‐8 Bridge, a length of 1.9 miles. The project will add one new managed lane in each direction, implement interchange improvements, and provide new system‐to‐system ramp connections. FDOT has hired Lochner to lead design.

In addition to adding one new managed lane in each direction, the project will widen SR 826 to a three‐lane divided facility. Thirteen new bridges will be designed, and two existing bridges over water will be widened. Bridge structures types include both concrete and steel structures. The western realignment of SR 826 and Peter’s Pike Canal will save FDOT over $17 million on right‐of‐way acquisition. The design of the relocated Peter’s Pike Canal will use bulkhead walls to minimize canal width and maximize canal conveyance. MSE walls will be incorporated along the elevated portions of SR 826 mainline and ramps. Multiple braided ramp connections will enhance safety by eliminating weave conditions.

Additional improvements include the widening and reconstruction of NW 77 Court, NW 77 Avenue, and Miami Lakes Drive (NW 154 Street) in coordination with the Town of Miami Lakes. These corridors will be enhanced to include sidewalk and improved signage and signalization. NW 77 Avenue, NW 146 Street, and NW 159 Street will be enhanced to include new shared‐use paths. The design of Miami Lakes Drive includes an envelope to accommodate a future shared‐use path. To enhance mobility and provide additional access points under the Palmetto Expressway, two new underpasses will be constructed at NW 146th Street and NW 159th Street.
