Shaler Street Bridge Replacement Wins ACEC National Recognition Award

Lochner is pleased to announce Shaler Street Bridge Replacement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has received a 2021 National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Lochner led design and provided construction consultation services for this Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project—the first in department history to incorporate self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

The replacement of the Shaler Street Bridge was part of the PennDOT project to reconstruct SR 19. This corridor, which crosses underneath the bridge, is a high-volume, north-south expressway that provides critical access to I‐376, Pittsburgh’s West End, and Heinz Field. Construction closures for the project had to be coordinated around heavy commuter travel times and Heinz Field events. To replace the Shaler Street Bridge while maintaining traffic along SR 19, Lochner designed the two-span bridge to be constructed off-site and moved to its final location using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The project marked the first time this innovative accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology had been used on a PennDOT project and reduced SR 19 construction closures to a total of four days.
