Celebrating National Intern Day: Maddie’s Journey at Lochner

In recognition of National Intern Day, we’re spotlighting one of the many outstanding interns contributing to Lochner’s work across the country: Construction Inspection Intern Madeline (Maddie) Melody.

Based in Salt Lake City, UT, Maddie is studying Construction Engineering at the University of Utah—a program that blends civil engineering and construction management. She joined Lochner in the summer following her freshman year and has now been a member of our team for over two years.

Before joining Lochner, Maddie gained valuable experience with Michigan’s largest bridge contractor, showing early initiative and readiness for the field. Her interest in construction began in high school after watching a day-in-the-life video of a construction manager on a stadium project. That curiosity, paired with strong mathematical skills, led her to pursue engineering and construction.

At Lochner, Maddie supports our construction engineering team, working full-time in the summers and part-time during the academic year. Under supervision, her responsibilities include inspecting asphalt, concrete, and drainage structures on roadway projects.

“Working alongside Lochner’s Utah leadership and the rest of the Construction Engineering Management team has been such an enriching experience,” Maddie said. “I’ve had the opportunity to be part of many noteworthy projects and work with mentors who’ve each taught me valuable expertise. Every day brings a new lesson, and I take pride in working for Lochner.”

Maddie has earned multiple professional certifications, including those from OSHA and Utah Department of Transportation (CITP Level I, ADA Ramp Training, ATSSA Traffic Control Technician, Fiberoptic Training, and more). She is also a fully billable inspector—an uncommon achievement for an intern.

Lochner Field Engineer Amelia (Mia) Anderson has mentored Maddie on project coordination and contracting.

“She’s proactive and highly effective at communicating with project managers and contractors on site,” said Mia. “Maddie is excelling, and she stands out for her initiative and professionalism.”

Maddie is just one example of how internships at Lochner offer meaningful, real-world experience, supported by dedicated mentorship and team collaboration. On this National Intern Day, we extend our appreciation to all our interns who bring fresh perspectives, energy, and talent to teams across the company.
