Lochner Advances Runway Rehabilitation at Pierre Regional Airport
Runway 13-31 at the Pierre Regional Airport (PIR) in South Dakota has reopened for aircraft operations following the completion of asphalt paving activities and installation of upgraded LED high-intensity runway edge lighting. Temporary runway markings are in place, and final grooving operations were completed after achieving the required asphalt curing period — scheduled during nighttime hours to minimize operational impacts.
This work is part of a multi-phase airport improvement and modernization program led by Lochner’s National Aviation Practice. In 2023, Lochner was selected by the City of Pierre to lead the airport’s five-year engineering contract — the firm’s first airport project in South Dakota.
The initiative targets new construction and long-term improvements to pavement and electrical infrastructure identified in the airport’s Capital Improvement Program with funding provided through grants administered by the Federal Aviation Administration and South Dakota DOT. Owned and operated by the City of Pierre, the two-runway facility plays a vital role in serving the state capitol, its residents and commercial service provider SkyWest Airlines, and the business community of central South Dakota.
