Lochner’s Brian Byrne Published in Modern Steel Construction
The October issue of Modern Steel Construction (MSC) was recently released, featuring an article from Lochner’s Brian Byrne, PE, regarding the use of the simple for dead, continuous for live (SDCL) design philosophy in steel bridges. The article attributes five bridges Lochner designed that highlight the effectiveness of the SDCL philosophy, with two of the most recent built with Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques for the Connecticut and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation. Byrne believes this technique for building small to medium span steel bridges will ease fabrication and reduce costs. Paired with ABC, SDCL detailing becomes a very constructible means to eliminate a bridge joint and improve the durability of the bridge.
