Originally constructed in 1940 and rehabilitated in 1986, the Highland Park Bridge is a 13-span structure consisting of a seven-span deck truss and a six-span GFS superstructure. It carries PA 1005 over the Allegheny River, Allegheny Valley Railroad, and Norfolk Southern Railroad and connects the Highland Park neighborhood with Sharpsburg Borough. In an effort to preserve the bridge, District 11 of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation hired Lochner to provide preliminary engineering services.
Lochner is preparing a type, size, and location (TS&L) report that details proposed repairs, developing the preliminary roadway and traffic design, completing environmental documentation, and preparing a right of way plan. Lochner also oversaw the project’s bridge inspection and is responsible for railroad coordination and public involvement.
